Trial Deck is proud to announce a new partnership with the SMILE BioResource team at the University of Oxford, part of the NIHR BioResource Network. Led by MBE, Rachel Upthegrove in collaboration with leading institutions including King’s College London, the University of Cambridge, the University of Birmingham, and Cardiff University, the SMILE BioResource is a nationwide initiative designed to create a rich, accessible database of individuals with lived experience of severe mental illness (SMI). Its goal is to support future mental health research by linking high-quality clinical and biological data with a participant-ready research cohort.

As the programme focuses on building a usable database of participants and their relevant health data, Trial Deck will be deployed specifically for its Electronic Data Capture (EDC) capabilities. This includes leveraging the existing library of validated PROMs, and use the Trial Deck Questionnaire Builder to digitise bespoke study forms for both patient and clinician recorded outcomes. These tools enable both participants and research teams to submit and manage data remotely, with all responses housed in a central, secure repository.

One of the key strengths of the Trial Deck platform is the flexibility of its Questionnaire Builder, which enables rapid digitisation and adaptation of forms to suit any required data model. This has ensured a smooth and efficient EDC process for the SMILE BioResource Programme, with Trial Deck now a key part of the data collection infrastructure. Our hope is that future clinical trials and studies drawing from this cohort can be launched directly through Trial Deck, leveraging the existing setup to accelerate deployment, reduce setup time, and ensure continuity across research activities.

The SMILE BioResource aims to recruit 2,000 participants over an initial three-year period. We are proud to support this pioneering initiative and look forward to advancing impactful health research through this collaboration.
